New situations of US media’s China-related report as roles of China and US in global governance shifted--an example of New York Times’ China-related reports in 2016

With continuously slow increase in world economy and diffusion of protectionism in the West, in 2016, China successfully hosted G20 Hangzhou Summit. At the beginning of 2017, President Xi Jinping gave a keynote speech   at the World Economic Forum. In May 2017, the Belt and Road International Cooperation Summit Forum took place in Beijing. These events are deep China’s marks on global economic governance. At the same time, US was questioned from all corners because of newly-elected President Trump’s conservatism policy. China and US’s shifts in role in global governance have entered the sight of public opinions. New York Times, a representative of US mainstream media, serves as an important platform where American foreign policy debates take place. In the time of these shifts in role in global governance, the way New York Times construct China’s national image, the way it looks at China’s international influence and its provision of reference for US policy on China, function as a window on the observation of new dynamics and direction of china-related public opinions in the West.

“Global City Day” is the first international day that the Chinese government has proposed to the United Nations. To host the Global City Day well is significant to both the country, region and the world. This article reviews activities since the introduction of the “Global City Day”, analyzes existing shortcomings, proposes strategy and provides advice in six aspects: identifying characteristics, improving mechanism, deepening research, actively planning activities, emphasizing communication, and providing resource support.

UN peacekeeping operations and China’s national image building

In post-Cold War era, there was a continuous expansion of UN peacekeeping operations’ function and scale, providing great opportunities for China to enhance the depth and the breadth of participation. Joining UN peacekeeping operation is  a key platform and institution for China to construct its national image and to test China’s capability of national image construction. This article first analyzes the significance of participating in UN peacekeeping operations to China’s national image construction. Then it offers several thoughts of the author on how to further strengthen China’s national image construction in UN peacekeeping operations.

Promoting people-to-people ties through international Chinese education--thoughts based on the field study of Cambodia Royal Institute’s Confucius Institute

In the new era, international Chinese education and Chinese culture dissemination play the role as a bridge of people-to-people ties. Based on a field study of Cambodia Royal Institute’s Confucius Institute, this paper analyzes the ways in which the process of Chinese education internationalization can improve people-to-people connectivity and the achievements and challenges in this process. It also offers suggestions to make an effort to create Chinese international education method and mode with new era characteristics from a strategic level of protecting China’s national interests.
