An important role in “Mini United Nations” — Children's cultural public diplomacy for “The Belt and Road” Initiative

“The Belt and Road” initiative aims at realizing mutual compensation of advantages and promoting common development on the basis of strengthening the international cooperation and connecting mutual development planning, and it also further puts forward the concept of community of common destiny for all mankind and demonstrates the broad view and good international image of China as a responsible great power to the whole world. The “Five Connections” approach, namely, “Policy Communication, Facilities Connectivity, Unimpeded Trade, Accommodation of Funds and People-topeople Bonds”, that proposed by President Xi Jinping has set the tone for the role to be played by the children's cultural public diplomacy for “The Belt and Road” Initiative. To this end, the author of this paper shares his own thoughts and experience that accumulated during the long-term career of children’s cultural international communication in the International Board On Books For Young People (IBBY).

The long-expected Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation was a full success. It was the largest diplomacy event of the People’s Republic of China, and served as a stage to present Chinese culture to the world. After listening to President Xi Jinping’s keynote speech and opening speech, as well as the speech at the welcoming banquet, I could hardly calm down for a long time, and I would like to share my thoughts based on the characteristics of the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture.

The Belt and Road Initiative, focusing on investments and the development of trade and infrastructure, inspires Chinese companies to go global, and offers a great opportunity for public diplomacy at the same time. However, there are elements in traditional Chinese entrepreneurs’ “Concept of Rightness and Benefit” that are not in line with the current approach. It is necessary to rethink the “Concept of Rightness and Benefit” in light of the initiative and of the concept of public diplomacy.
Five key aspects for public diplomacy to enhance the development of the Belt and Road Initiative

Over the past three years, the Belt and Road Initiative has been put into practice. Originally a mere initiative, it has made progress in various prospects. After the success of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in May this year, the development of the initiative will acquire a new momentum. The further development of the initiative requires stronger public support and a more solid social foundation. Five key issues should be focused on in the public diplomacy sphere to enhance the development of the initiative.
